Addon controls

Planets

Enables the addition, removal, and renaming of planets in the scene. The system's flexibility allows for dynamic creation, with the maximum number of planets dictated by the user's hardware capabilities.

Planet Surface

Albedo: Applies a color map or texture, defining the planet's surface appearance. Roughness: Adjusts the surface texture, affecting how light interacts with the terrain. Height: Implements a displacement map to create realistic topographical features. Emission: Allows specific areas to emit light, with adjustable emission strength for varying intensities.

Atmosphere

Calculates atmospheric properties based on user-defined parameters. This includes the atmosphere's radius, density, and light scattering characteristics, offering a realistic portrayal of planetary atmospheres.

Rings

Our addon provides two ring creation methods: Procedural and Textured. Procedural Rings: Generate rings with adjustable scale, detail, roughness, and color. Customize inner/outer radius, shadow impact, and translucency for realistic or artistic effects. Textured Rings: Create rings using textures with control over color tint, rotation, inner/outer radius, shadow factor, and translucency, offering a blend of realism and artistic flexibility.

Transform

Allows for precise planetary positioning and orientation. Includes options for global coordinate placement, viewer-based positioning, or setting planets in elliptical orbits.

The science behind PCO

Celestial objects are raytraced analytical spheres. This rendering approach is less prone to precision errors at extremely large distances and immense scales. They also interact with each other - cast penumbra shadows and contribute to indirect light.

Planets use a simplified form of Hapke BRDF. It makes them look ‘velvety’ at grazing angles. For water worlds, we implemented GGX Specular distribution model. Rings, atmospheres, and real surface displacement are in the concept phase and will be introduced once the rocky planets are fully functional. Indirect lighting is based on analytical spherical area light.

Planet with a ring

Rings contribute to indirect light, rings are lit by planets, and planets are lit by rings. A large portion of our time is invested in sorting functions - to sort and mix opaque and semi-transparent objects. The process is automated whenever you add a new celestial object.
